Preface
For most of my life, since my childhood, without the benefits of corrective lens, I am legally blind, with the visual condition called myopia [the inability to see far away]. As long as I use my eyeglasses when appropriate such as out in public or when driving, I am essentially normal and without any far-reaching disadvantages, for the most part, nearsightedness at times is somewhat a blessing with all of the evil in the world!
As an heir to the things of the Kingdom of God, I may be very successful in navigation in this earth with physical nearsightedness, yet such is not the case with the problem of spiritual myopia!
Spiritual myopia is not being able to see and understand those hidden things of God that are designed by Him for our ultimate freedom and liberation while we now live.
Not knowing and applying these benefits, blessings and or attributes to our lives, may present very grave and fatal conditions that have very negative and eternal consequences.
This blog on today is just a small yet humble attempt at shedding some much-needed illumination on just was happening behind the heavenly scenes when God used total darkness in the land, during the crucifixion of the Son of Man, in an effort at freeing humanity from present slavery and eternal soul damnation.
The Light of Christ
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” –John 8:12
Without Christ as a very real and personal blessing in my life, I have faced the facts that the entirety of my living would have very little value whether I have my corrective lens or not, my entire soul and my world perspective on the essential importance of this life is very much distorted and without clarity.
The Master’s prescription for my condition depicts not only my soul condition, as a sinner; it also reveals that I am, without Him, essentially, walking in darkness. Thus, His words, “I am the light of the world,” is rooted in His relationship with His Father, as my spiritual treatment for all of my soul-care needs.
“The light of Christ,” writes John Piper, “is the brightness of God shining on the retina of the human soul.” My life, in reality, is not fully complete and never will be complete or have substantial meaning without Jesus as Lord and Savior of my soul.
The good news in all that I am communicating is that human souls are all created to crave the Creator, our Father, and only through a relationship with our Savior Jesus can the dark parts of our hearts become permanently brighten and enhanced throughout our intimate relationship in Him.
Ways in which Darkness is turned into Light
Over the centuries and even in our present culture, skeptics and atheist have attempted to disprove some of the most important historic, foundational truths and events that clearly distinguishes the Judeo-Christian tradition from that of all other truth and or religions.
For there are many various “lights,” truths, and or enlightenment for human’s innate quest at higher conscientiousness in our earthly travel, for the purpose of this blog post, my purpose is to highly recommend the “Light” that Jesus the Messiah offers.
Below, I will just list, some of the ways in which a person who at one time, disbelieved, doubted or was critical of the reality of God, only in their honest persistence, eventually come out of the Darkness, Into the Light.
- Through reading the spiritual writings of other Believers.
- Through experimentation with prayer or reading the Holy Scriptures.
- A thorough historical study of the Gospels.
- Honest philosophical reasoning.
- Watching the “witness lifestyle” of a faithful Believer.
- Effective utilization of modern advances yet having a healthy reality of the limitations associated with scientific analysis of the existence of God.
- The study of Nature, the created world, and beauty.
- God supernaturally invading the life of an individual.
- The Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus from Nazareth.
The Miracles of Calvary
For good reason, if anyone could disprove the resurrection of Jesus from Nazareth, there could perhaps be a very just cause for critics, atheists and skeptics alike, to discount Christianity to be essentially no different than other world religions.
Just for a moment, let us imagine that the resurrection of Jesus from Nazareth “Did not” happened!
The question, is there equal if not greater historical events that not only proves the resurrection of Jesus as an ill-refutable absolute truth but also it uncovers and magnifies the often, hidden power and sovereignty of the “Almightiness of God” as recorded by Matthew 27: 45, 51-53, Complete Jewish Bible?
From noon until three o’clock in the afternoon, all the Land was covered with darkness. At that moment the parokhet [veil, curtain] in the Temple was ripped in two from top to bottom; and there was an earthquake, with rocks splitting apart. Also, the graves were opened, and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life; and after Yeshua [Jesus] rose, they came out of the graves and went into the holy city, where many people saw them.
Even before Jesus rose from the grave, Matthew’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus on the Cross revealed five additional miracles that historically are connected with The Master’s death.
These very real and historical events were a combination of heavenly, earthly, and beneath the earth influences that communicates meaning and forces toward the clear evidence to defend the truth and need of our redemption in His blood and death.
- all the land was covered with darkness.
Overall the land the darkness continued for three hours. This darkness happened at noontime and was not caused by the absence of the sun.
- the parokhet [veil, curtain] in the Temple has ripped in two from top to bottom
- an earthquake, with rocks splitting apart.
- the graves were opened,
- and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life;
- Yeshua [Jesus] rose, they came out of the graves and went into the holy city, where many people saw them.
The True Light was Hidden
Well within the three hours of total darkness that enwrapped Jesus shut Him off from all eyewitnesses. Only one’s imagination could conceive the secrecy of Jesus and God during those last hours when He was hidden from the world view.
This darkness of “The True Light” symbolized those inconceivable suffering our only True Redeemer. However, as the darkness was the symbol of the Father’s wrath, it was also an absolute truth of His Son’s righteousness.
None but a person of spotless righteousness, having no sin of His own for which to answer, could be made suitable to the demands of God decree toward sin and redemption.
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt surely bury him the same day; for he that is hanged is a reproach unto God; that thou defile not thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. Deuteronomy 21:23
If in fact, the Messiah was stricken of God, He, therefore, was the Beloved of God. Jesus to suffer for humanity’s sin He, in fact, was God’s anointed One from above.
This three hours of total darkness show us what an untold evil and curse sin is in our lives as human beings, yet this very reality only magnifies the extent of Infinite Love by God in saving us from sin and ourselves.
Heavenly Illumination from Spiritual Obscurity
As we draw closer to our conclusion of this blog, permit me to just list three important lessons that we all can learn and celebrate about this matter of darkness during Jesus’s crucifixion.
The first miracle of darkness was how God manifested the absolute truth of the Savior’s character and His mission.
Jesus throughout His ministry told His disbelievers that He came from heaven to save them from their sins, all the while they were offended at Him. When He said, “I am the Son of God,” they took up stones to stone Him, while requesting Him to show they a sign from heaven.
Well within these three hours of darkness, heaven did give forth a sign that all of humanity can see!
The second important spiritual benefit of this darkness is reflective of the importance of the supernatural manner of Jesus death for our sinful redemption.
The Master had proclaimed this truth on the night in which He suffered, and repeatedly before. Our present tense pardon, our equally important peace in our evil age, and our ever-unfolding aspects of eternal life are our divinely guaranteed security that comes only through Him and His blood.
Thirdly, is just how God chose to manifest His own miraculous testimony about the death of His Son for our needed redemption.
He chooses Total Darkness
His very own testimony took the form of darkness due to the hideous suffering of the death being inflicted by Himself on the Son! It was He who laid upon the Master the iniquities of us all, and it was He who dropped out of the heavens, veiling Himself in the darkness, smiting the Son, wounded, bruised, chastised, beaten with stripes, by the very Father.
Without question, the very worst was not just the crucifixion; it was the separation from the Father, something that all of us can relate to.
Only our Creator could create the appropriate supernatural “just cause” of these three hours of Darkness, somehow coming into our sensibilities yet standing Holy out apart from this miracle, yet putting His hand and touching His own instrument for the purpose of freeing humanity from all darkness. Amen.
God’s Love is so much Stronger to Save us than our sins is to destroy Us!
