Preface
The Holy Scriptures have been called many things over the years, but very few people have called or even see it as one of the greatest songbooks written.
In the Bible, there are at least 185 songs that express honor and praise to the God of Israel of victory over major battles, coronation, funerals, and miracles.
Today’s blog post is dedicated to my favorite song in all of Scripture, Hannah’s Song as recorded in 1Samuel 2:1-10.
God is Ever Mindful of each of Us
Hannah’s personal and societal distress was she could not have children and this affects her happiness, her sense of self-worth, her relationship with her primary family, and the larger community.
She may have emotionally felt rejected by some yet her husband Elkanah does love her and doesn’t mind about the lack of children, but that is not enough to make up for all the hurt.
Hannah’s peculiar circumstances as is the case with each of us can become lost in the sight of the far greater dealings of God’s Kingdom and His sovereignty as it pertains to His final plan of redemption. For only God is the sole author and finisher of all soul deliverance.
The Song of Hannah
1 Samuel 2:1-10
Hannah, the mother of Samuel prayed my heart is exalted in the God of Israel in whom my honor, dignity, and strength are exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my adversary who hates me for I rejoice in Your victory and deliverance. (v.1)
There is no one sacred like the God of Israel. Instead, there is no one except You; and there is no refuge like our God Supreme. (v.2)
Do not become so great so arrogant, so powerful, or let arrogant come from your mouth for the God of Israel is the Almighty who knows, and by Him, your performance is measured out. (v.3)
Thought for consideration:
“Knowledge is of great price, for it is placed between two Divine names, “A God of knowledge is the Lord!” 1 Samuel 2:3. Therefore mercy is to be denied to those who do not know. All human actions are weighed by God according to their motive and intent.
The bows of the powerful are crushed but the feeble are girded with strength. (v.4)
Every power which will be something in and of itself is destroyed by the Lord our God. Every weakness which despairs of itself is to be transformed into power.
The satisfied hire themselves out for food, but the hungry are satisfied. The barren woman gives birth to an indefinite number, but she who has many sons is mourning in sickness due to the loss of her children. (v.5)
The God of Israel brings death and revives; some He causes them to experience the depths of adversity and peril: while His own will have a life of deliverance and prosperity. (v.6)
God sends impoverishment and wealth; He causes some to be abased and He actively causes some to arise. (V.7)
It is He who arises the weak from the dust and actively raises the poor from the refuse. He seats them equally with the noble and distributes on them a seat of honor and splendor. For the foundation of the earth is the God of Israel. and upon them, He set the world. (v8)
God is the One who protects the steps of His faithful one but the evildoers are to perish in misery, darkness, and destruction for by their strength no individual will prevail. (v.9)
Those who oppose the God of Israel will be shattered. He will be violently agitated from heaven against them. God will judge the ends of the earth and will put strength to His King. He will exalt the power of His Anointed, the Messiah.
The conclusion of the hymn is perhaps one of my reasons for this song being my favorite in Scripture. This song is all so relative during all of the pain, suffering, evil that persists at present.
First, Hannah was moved to pray for the destruction of God’s enemies. Secondly, Hannah’s song turned into a prophetic prayer was but partially fulfilled in that the king soon to be anointed by her son as the deliverer of Israel, [ her answered prayer]. While the last observation indicates that her song reaches forward to Him whom all of the Jewish kings foreshadowed, King Messiah.
How can Hannah’s Song minister to the broken spirits and souls of our generation?
- Present your entire soul before the God of the Universe as your only refuge and help.
- Do not engage in evil speech. Learn how to respond to opposition with restraint and grace or do not respond at all.
- Instill and practice daily spiritual disciplines to increase your overall spiritual fitness. [prayer, fasting, reading of the Holy Scriptures, confession, repentance, and serving others].
- Develop a Biblical worldview that is based upon God’s Word and His covenants. In doing this, you will maintain a very healthy mentality of righteous expectations of all events in your life.
- If you make an oath or vow to God during adversity, when you are blessed, keep your promise to God.
- Avoid becoming haughty or hard-hearted during times of trouble. Practice humility while showing respect to those in authority.
- Appeal to those whom God has placed in your inner-circle to pray God’s will for your life and situation. Amen
