"A Living Soul Cannot Live On Bread Alone"

Thirsting After the Living God

October 22, 2022 by Alonzo Thornton

Your Dwelling Place

As a deer longs for streams of water, I long for You, God. Your instruction is a wonder, this is why I follow it. Your Words are a doorway that lets in light, giving understanding to the thoughtless. My mouth is wide open, as I pant with longing for Your mitzvot [Commandments].

How deeply loved are Your dwelling places, Adonai-Tzva’ot [Lord of Hosts]! My soul yearns, yes, faints with longing for the courtyard of Adonai [Lord]; my heart and body cry for joy to the Living God.

I thirst for God, the Living God. Where can I come and appear before God? O God, You are my God, I will seek You eagerly. My heart thirst for You, and my body longs for You in a land parched and exhausted, where no eater can be found.

Dependence on God

A deer as an untamed animal that thrived in the land, demonstrates complete dependence on God’s gracious provisions. As noted in Psalm 42:1, the writer indicated his spiritual thirst could be satisfied only by the sustaining presence of God Almighty.

What about your spiritual thirst and or condition?

The psalmist reflects this thirst in the panting of the graceful and sturdy deer that is desperate for the life-giving soul-care refreshment of a cool running stream. What a poignant symbol of the need for sustenance from a source outside of our control and means. Only God is our only hope for what we need in this life. [Gleaned from, “Deer As Imagery in the Old Testament”, Kevin Hall]

Learning to depend on God, means learning to fully trust in Him to supply all of your needs. By doing so, you are following Jesus’ example, who trusted in His father and did all things according to His will.

So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”

Prayer

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen
